The Only Jewelry Box I’ve Ever Owned

Posted Saturday, July 19th, 2008

I imagine that most people go through several jewelry boxes in their lifetimes, just like they do with purses, shoes, and cars. Not me. I’ve only ever owned one jewelry box, and it’s the only one I’ll ever need. It’s a simple jewelry box, a nice wooden box with two glass doors. It’s been stained a dark brown shade with a few darker textures painted throughout. On the inside, it has four compartments for rings, bracelets, earrings, or anything else. On the right side, there’s an open space with hooks to hang up necklaces. It even has a music box.

I’ve described how it looks, and I think it’s beautiful. The real reason it’s so special to me is that it belonged to my grandmother, who was a vibrant, energetic, and completely off-the-wall spirit. We used to sit in her bedroom while she told me stories about her jewelry and the significant moments in her life. She’d let me put on every piece of jewelry at once; then I’d perform little fashion shows to the music playing from the jewelry box. I was the only grandchild she let in her room to play with her jewelry.
